Caravan Tips and Advice

Preparing your Caravan for the Journey Ahead

  1. Loose articles must be stowed securely. Do not stow tins, bottles or heavy items in overhead lockers prior to towing.

  2. Ensure all lockers and cupboard doors are closed and secured.

  3. Plug in your electrical connections.

  4. Connect the "breakaway" cable. (This must be secured around the towing bar assembly and not round the ball head.)

  5. Release the caravan handbrake, adjust all mirrors from the driving seat and proceed.

  6. Ensure all bunks are secure.

  7. Wind up your caravans corner steadies to the fully retracted position.

  8. When the hoitch is seated securely on the ball, release the locking catch ensuring that the locking mechanism is fully engaged on the underside of the towball.

  9. Wind up the jockey wheel and retract to its highest position.

  10. Fit and secure your stabiliser (if used, although stabilisers are recommended....these will help reduce your caravan from snaking about during transit.)

  11. Ensure allrooflights are closed and secured.

  12. Ensure main table is stored in its transit position.

  13. The fridge is on 12v operation and door lock is set.

  14. Ensure all windows are fully closed and latched.

  15. NEVER tow with windows on the night setting. Leave all curtains and blinds open to aid rear visability.

  16. Ensure Gas cylinders are correctly position, secured and turned off.

  17. Check Battery is secure and the connecting cable is disconnected and stowed.

  18. You should check that the gas locker, battery locker and cassette toilet doors are all secure.

  19. Check your wheelnuts, tyre pressure and the conditions.

  20. With the caravan handbrake on you should adjust the jockey wheel so that it is in good contact with the ground.
